A great way to visit Philadelphia Zoo is with a charter bus, coach bus, party bus, mini bus, passenger coaches or school bus hired from Bus Company Philadelphia. With a rental bus, you and your group have a flexibility of vehicle choice and trip schedule that normal bus services cannot give you.
The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in the United States. It opened in July, 1874. At its opening, it held 1,000 animals. The Smithsonian Institution used to house its animal collection at the Philadelphia Zoo before the National Zoo was opened. The Philadelphia Zoo has a worldwide reputation for successfully breeding many endangered animals in captivity. The Zoo is also involved in animal habitat conservation efforts worldwide.
Located on the West Bank of the Schuylkill River, the Philadelphia Zoo sits on a 42 acre site. The zoo currently houses a collection of over 1,300 animals, many of which are endangered. Education and conservation of animals is very much at the forefront of the zoo’s agenda, and visitors to the Philadelphia Zoo will find many educational and interactive exhibits.
Visiting the zoo is best done with a rental bus from Bus Company Philadelphia, especially if you are travelling in a group. The Philadelphia Zoo caters to group visits, and special arrangements can be made with the zoo for private group guided tours with docents. Docents are specially trained Philadelphia Zoo volunteers who can give groups guided tours and educational lectures on just about any zoo animal.
Some of the attractions at Philadelphia Zoo are the Big Cat Falls, where lions, tigers, pumas and jaguars are housed. This zoo attraction is famous as being the location where Rocky Balboa proposed to his fiancee Adrian in the movie “Rocky”. Another attraction is the McNeil Aviation Center. This aviary houses many birds from the tropics and sub tropical regions of the world, and houses 2 species of birds that are now extinct in the wild, the Guam Rail and the Guam Kingfisher. You can also take a ride in the Zooballon. This tethered helium balloon takes visitors 400 feet up over the zoo, giving a great view of the zoo and the city of Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $14 per visitor. Zooballoon rides are $15 per person. Group tickets and discount tickets for active military personnel and families are available.
